Brunswick Kyrene - 5/20/18

Location:

Our event this weekend was at Brunswick Kyrene lanes. The event drew 117 total entries (74 qualifying & 43 parlays), had 34 cashers, a 1 in 3.4 cash ratio and paid out over $5,300.00 in main and side event prize fund! The players bowled on a very tough PBA 47ft Scorpion oil pattern that had very low scoring on the fresh and then higher scoring on the later squads. It wasn’t possible for many players to successfully play right of the 7 or 8 boards.  Most players were left of the 2nd arrow and it seemed that the players that had softer ball speeds or higher rev rates faired the best throughout the day. It was definitely a tough pattern and was a change of pace for the regulars who haven’t bowled on a long pattern in quite a while.

As always, we want to welcome our first-time bowlers to the SFT AHT family! Welcome Emilio Perez, Chris Wilson, Phillip Monday, Michael Bailey and James Newell Jr. to our bowling family! We hope you all had a good time at your first event and we look forward to seeing you at the next one! We had a few first time quarter-finalists or some that haven’t made it to the quarterfinals for a while.  Congrats to Willy Vuong, Andy Morin, Zachary Martinez, Brian Schamber, Brad Erickson, Michael Boley, Zach Beckett, Soni Glover, Chris Allen and Michael Bailey.  Nice bowling!  Also Willy Vuong, Ernie Mendoza and Brad Erickson made the quarterfinals off of the economy parlay.  We always have one or two bowlers that are able to get through and cash in the quarterfinals from the economy parlay and it’s always great to see players taking advantage of the affordable parlay.  Nice bowling to all of you!

The quarter finals were pretty low scoring on the fresh 47ft Scorpion oil pattern with the exception of a couple of bowlers in each division.  The A division cut score was +14, B division -14 and C division +94. Since the handicap is 80% of 210, this means the players were bowling a bit over average to advance to being the top 2 players in the whole tournament in their division. This is a good illustration of how difficult the fresh pattern was. The extra length made it tough until the lanes broke down a little bit. However, in the A Division Ron Gonzales and Chris Allen were the advancers.  In their semi-final match, they both had the same amount of handicap, 12 pins each, and Chris was able to defeat Ron, 223 to 168. In the C division #1 seed Soni Glover would take on Willy Vuong for a chance for both bowlers to make the finals for the first time.  Soni was able to stay clean and was able to beat Willy, 238 to 207.

The B division was lead by Brian Schamber who qualified for the semi-finals at +76.  He would have to wait while his opponent would have to be determined due to a tie between Lynn Arthur and Brian Roever.  Both bowlers finished the quarterfinal round at -14, so this would lead to a 9th & 10th frame roll off.  Brian was up first and his first shot skidded a little too long and left him with the 5-7 split.  He was unable to pick up the split, putting himself behind in this quick roll off format.  Lynn was able to capitalize by rolling strikes in both the 9th and 10th frames to shut out Brian.  In the semi-final match, Lynn was unable to keep his mojo working and Brian Schamber was able to move past him 229 to 192.  For the first time in quite a while, we had three first time division champions. Chris, Brian and Soni all won their respective divisions for the first time in each of their SFT AHT careers.

The final match was a back and forth affair with each bowler feeling out the lanes.  Brian and Soni quickly missed makeable spares to let Chris make up some of the handicap that he was giving to both bowlers.  Chris was able to keep calm and pick up his spares, which kept him in the game for the first 5 frames, until he was able to find a line that he liked.  Then he was able to capitalize and string along a 3 bagger reduce the handicap disadvantage.  This put pressure on both Soni and Brian to strike or stay clean by making their spares.  In the 9th frame Chris was able to strike while his oppenents were trying to keep pace to stay ahead of him, but Chris would not be denied.  He was able to double in the 10th frame to put pressure on Soni, who had to spare out in order to get the win.  Soni’s first ball in the 10th frame went a little long and left a washout.  Her spare shot narrowly missed picking up the spare, which would give the win to Chris Allen.  This was Chris’s first SFT AHT title match and first SFT AHT title! In 2nd place was Soni Glover and Brian Schamber in 3rd place.  The prize fund was increased to pay out an extra $500.00 since Chris wasn’t in the progressive pot, giving all the bowlers an extra $25.00 on their quarterfinals check.  Congrats to the finalists and other cashers today! Thank you for coming out and we look forward to seeing you at our major event next weekend at Glenfair Lanes!
