AMF Union Hills - 4/21/18

Location:

This weekend’s event was at AMF Union Hills lanes. There were a lot of other events going on around town, but we were happy to get a little over 50 total entries. The players bowled on the 43ft Mexico City oil pattern. It was slightly tougher oil pattern as bowlers are not used to playing straighter in the middle of the lane.  It was very difficult to score, on the fresh, as trying to hook the ball back from the outside was not ideal with longer oil patterns. The cut scores at this event were much higher in the A division then the other divisions, but the average cut score to advance was around +30 with divisional insurance, so the scoring was not too high. However, it seemed like each division had certain players who bowled really high and typically these were the players that were the most comfortable getting their ball to roll instead of hooking the ball in the middle of the lane.

We had a few new bowlers at this event as well. Let’s welcome Chris Rouse, Brandon Rouse and John Newton to the SFT AHT family! Hope you guys enjoyed your first event and we look forward to seeing you at another one. We had some parlay power players as well in James Roethle and Edward Lee.  These were all players that made it to the quarter finals but only had the $25 economy parlay entry fee as a main cost. Congrats guys!

The quarter finals had similar scoring as qualifying, with marginal scoring but certain players really bowling lights out. Those players were Sean Ashley in the A division who shot +86, Tawna McDonald in the C division who shot +66 and Lynn Arthur in the B Division who shot +108! It was fair to assume that we were going to have a high scoring final match.

The final match started off with Tawna McDonald and Sean Ashley filling some frames and throwing some strikes. While Tawna was in it early, she had a few splits and open spares that put her quite a bit behind. Eventually she was able to put some shots together to try to keep pace. In practice Sean lost his interchangeable thumb and had to use a different thumb switch grip than he had been using all day.  He started off slow but was able strike out in his final few frames.  Unfortunately for Tawna and Sean, Lynn speed out the gate and never slowed down enough for her or Sean to catch back up. Lynn started off with 8 strikes in a row to put the match away early.  The big question was, was he going to keep it up and shoot a perfect 300 game in the championship match.  Unfortunately, he ended up splitting in the 9th frame which was the only frame keeping him from a 300, but this would give Lynn his 9th title! Nice job Lynn!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to the event and we look forward to maybe seeing you all at our next event next Saturday at AMF McRay lanes!
