Our event this weekend was at AMF McRay. We had 82 total entries (45 qualifying & 37 economy parlay), with 22 cashers, a 1 in 3.4 cash ratio and a payout of over $3,200.00 in main and side event prize funds. The players bowled on a very difficult 40ft PBA Bear oil pattern that had some lower scores than usual. The pattern allowed players to play from any angle, but the key to doing well was leaving makeable spares and picking up spares. Pair to pair there were some differences with oil carry down, but once the oil pattern started to break down in the 3rd squad, then scores increased a little with the average cut being around +40.
We want to quickly welcome our new bowlers that joined us for this event! CJ Locke, Justin Thompson, Joseph Thompson, Josh Thompson, Madison Faulk, Kathy Crandall, Christopher Gerchak, Tony Cabrales and Cornell Hart bowled in their first SFT AHT event this weekend! It’s pretty awesome to still see new faces coming out to give us a try! We hope all of you had a great time, and we look forward to seeing you next time! We had not one, not two, but three parlay power players in Michael Frenak, Josh Thompson and Nicklas Jimenez who turned their $25 entry fee into a spot in the quarter final round! Michael and Nick both made it all the way to the Finals! While they were the only ones to capitalize off of the economy parlay, we had several players making their first ever SFT AHT quarter finals! Congrats to Josh Thompson who made his first ever quarterfinals today in his first event and also to Cedrick Bell, Vance Varholdt and Nicholas Berhorst on making the quarterfinals in quite a while. Also, congrats to Michael Dragon for winning Momma’s Mystery score for $50.00! Your winner of the free plastic ball drawing, with an option to upgrade to any Track high-performance ball for $85.00, was Stacie Huglin.
The quarterfinals were played on the fresh pattern and typically we have lower scores because of it. Also, due to the fact that there were 5 bowlers in each division, and the 1 in 3 cut ratio to the semi-finals only advanced 1 bowler per division. The top bowler in each Division would move straight into the Final match. The cut scores in the quarterfinals were really low and requiring only bowling your average to advance as the Division Champion. The Division Champions were Michael Dragon in the A Division at +42, Michael Frenak in the B Division at +34 and the #1 overall seed Nicklas Jimenez from the C Division at +47.
Going into the Final match you would have to think the favorite to win would be Michael Frenak. He had been bowling great all day shooting +118 in the parlay and then leading the B Division in qualifying at +78. Michael would be making his debut in the Finals and would be looking for his 1st AHT SFT title. In his way would be Michael Dragon, who was looking for his 3rd title and a piece of the $700.00 first place prize. Nicklas Jimenez was also looking his first title in his 2nd Finals appearance. Both Nick and Michael Frenak had made it to the Finals off the economy parlay and they would have to chance to turn their $25 investment into $700.00!
Michael Frenak would start off the match with spare as all the bowlers were trying to figure out the lanes and quickly find a line to the pocket. Michael Dragon would strike in the first frame, but would leave single pin spares as he would try to get his ball to hit the pocket right. Nick would miss his opening spare attempt and struggle with the pair giving both Michaels a chance to make up the handicap they were giving up to him. Halfway through the match and it would look like Dragon had finally found the pocket as he was able to double in the fifth and sixth frames, but in the seventh he would leave an ugly 1-2-4-6-10 split which he was unable to convert. Michael Frenak would also have transition issues, chopping the baby split (3-10) in the fifth and then only getting 3 pins in the sixth frame as he got too far right, taking out the 6-9-10 with his first shot and putting it in the gutter on his spare attempt. Nick would double in the sixth and seventh frames to put pressure on both Michaels. Michael Frenak was able to strike out in the eighth and ninth frames to give himself a lead that he would ride to the end as he was able to get a strike in the tenth to seal up his win with a score of 223, giving him his first AHT SFT title and $700.00!!! Nick Jimenez would double in the ninth and tenth to jump pass Dragon finishing at 209 to 192. Congrats to Nick on 2nd Place and also to Michael Dragon on 3rd Place.
Thank you for everyone that came out to support the event! We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event at Glenfair lanes next Sunday! Hope you all have a great week!
